Flix Cinema Record Highest Attendance

The Flix society has broken it’s record attendance levels at a viewing of Inception with 307 people turning up over two viewings.

The screenings on November 7 were the highest the society had achieved since moving to the Cope Auditorium in 2006 and also placed equal-second on the all time list.

The screening at 8.30pm had a sell out audience with 226 people crammed into the Cope and the earlier 5.30pm screening had 81.

The previous record for the society at the Cope Auditorium was 190 people for the showing of Star Trek in Freshers Week last year in 2009.

The highest attendance of all time remains the showing of About a Boy in 2002 which had 321 people turn up to view the film starring Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult.

Flix chair, Ellie Mowbray said: “After winning “SOCFED Society of the Year” for the past 2 years and in July coming runner up at the NUS Awards for “Best Student Club or Society 2010” I thought we might have peaked – but apparently not.

“A sell-out at a show means more to us than any silverware we could have won because, as a Student Society, it’s the approval and support of our members that matters above any external judges.

“Seeing the Auditorium so packed was an inspiring sight and a deserved reward for the hard work put in by committee and alumni to make Flix what it is today.”

The audience was so large there were no seats left in the auditorium and some people were left in the aisles

Miss Mowbray added: “It was so unexpected. We knew Inception would be a big turnout, but reaching capacity is unheard of.

“Our first thought was to fit as many people as possible in comfortably by asking them to fill every seat on the row and giving up the seats we’d reserved for committee. Unfortunately, two people had to be turned away because of fire safety regulations, but I’m just glad it wasn’t more than two.

“Next year will be the 64th year Flix has been running and yet we’re going from strength to strength rather than heading for retirement.

“Our goal for the next few years is to find sponsorship or raise funds for a digital projector which will allow us to show films in 3D. Other than that, we’d love to see everyone back next Sunday for another fantastic showing.”

The next showing on Sunday is for Twilight: Eclipse (The third part of the Twilight Saga), with 176 turning up to New Moon the society are expecting another high turnout.

Flix Annual AGM 2010!

Flix is holding it's AGM on Sunday 24th in the Student Union. If you've never heard of us, it's a great opportunity to learn what we're about. If you've been to one of our shows and are a member, then why not join the committee. We've got quite a few positions open for the upcoming year, so come along and see if you could be running the show!

FLIX makes NUS Shortlist!

From the Loughborough Student's Union
LSU's FLIX Student Cinema has been shortlisted for the NUS Student Club/Society of the year award 2010!
LSU nominated the Society for the award after they had won LSU's Society of Year award for 2 years running, over 300 nominations were recived for the NUS Awards and FLIX have been whittled down to the last 3 in the country!
It's an enormous achievement for the Society to get to this stage, as it means even if they don't win the award, they are amongst the top 3 club/societies in the country! This includes every sports club and every society at every students union!
FLIX student cinema runs film nights in the cope auditorium on a weekly basis, and it is believed they have been shortlisted for their fantastic work in freshers week and their work to integrate international students through their Annual International Film Festival.
If you would like to see more info about joining FLIX or just about what films they are showing, then see their website for more info:http://www.lufbra.net/society/flix/
The Awards ceremony is taking place at Warwich SU on Thursday the 1st of July, so fingers crossed they can bring the trophy home!

Massive credit must go the Society's committee, the current Chair Eleanor Mowbray, last years chair Lee Adams and his predecessor Dom Low.
The Students Activities Administrator Jody Alexander has said "Myself and Budge are delighted to see FLIX getting national recognition for the fantastic work they've done over the last year",

Brian 'Budge' Parkinson
